The Humble Beginning of Sol De Maio

From Our Hearts to your Table

 

It all began on October 8, 1926, in the city of Mercedes, Uruguay, where my grandmother, Blanca Laura Medina, was born to Lauriano and Amelia. They were a loving and humble family, who worked hard to cultivate the land for nourishment. While her parents toiled in the fields, my grandmother was raised by her grandparents, who instilled in her a deep love for cooking. From a young age, she found joy in the kitchen, learning to prepare meals that not only fed the body but also warmed the heart. Her greatest delight was seeing the smiles of contentment when she fed her family and friends—especially when they drizzled her signature emerald chimichurri over their feast. 

As she grew older, her passion for cooking flourished. Eventually, she moved to Montevideo and began working as a cook in a Chinese restaurant, where she met my grandfather, Jose. Their connection grew, and soon they were courting. After some time, they married and started a family of their own, raising six children—Jose (my father), Marta, Blanca, Monica, Cristina, and Tony. Throughout her life, my grandmother passed on her love for cooking to each of her children, but perhaps the most treasured gift she left them was her chimichurri recipe. In our family, this sauce was more than just a condiment—it was a symbol of unity and love. 

As a child, I didn’t fully appreciate the significance of those moments. But one day, as a young adult, I watched more closely. My father, with quiet concentration, began chopping the parsley with care, peeling the garlic with a certain pride. It was then that I asked if I could help. He smiled and nodded. From that moment on, preparing chimichurri became our special tradition. But it was more than just sharing a recipe—it was a passage into our family’s history, a connection to my grandmother’s love of making people smile through food.

That tradition has been passed down through the generations, and today it lives on through Sol de Maio. The chimichurri that started in a small kitchen in Mercedes now brings families together. For us, it’s not just about flavor; it’s about the story, the love, and the heritage that each bottle carries. Every drizzle of Sol de Maio chimichurri is a celebration of the past, present, and future—a tribute to my grandmother’s legacy and to the shared meals that continue to bind us together.
